The previous blog author did an outstanding post on regionals so I am using a bit of his information for this post as well so thanks Todd Schwartzkopf.

Regionals is the first big competition for the students.  I love hearing from my son about all the fun they had on the buses.  God bless the chaperones and all the hijinks they endure!

This Regional Championship features high school marching bands from around the region in Preliminary competition. The top 12 scoring bands advance to the evening’s Finals and the naming of the 2021 Bands of America Regional Champion.

Driving
It is just over a 3 hour drive from Jenison to The Glass Bowl.  There is one detour on 27 that will reroute you a few miles but it doesn’t appear too bad.
PARKING
At any college, parking is challenging. In the past, I have only parked in Areas 8 & 9 as shown in the map. The north lots (Areas 10, 6, 4) are likely reserved for equipment trucks and such. In the past, parking has been provided for free.

TICKETS
Ticket prices have increased a little for this season. They are now $25 for Prelim’s and another $25 for Finals if these are purchased separately. If you want to attend both and save a few bucks, purchase the all-day pass for $40. Historically, Jenison makes it into finals, however, this cannot ever be guaranteed.

MERCHANDISE
Within the gates of the stadium there are tables of items being sold. They range from t-shirts and sweatshirts to buttons and patches. There are usually some other misc items as well. The University of Toledo will have a table there with some of their band members in case you have any questions about the school and their program.

BETWEEN PRELIM'S & FINALS
After Prelim’s conclude and the bands are announced for Finals, you will be required to leave the stadium. You will also have to take your belongings with you as your seats cannot be saved for Finals. You do not have to move your car out of the parking lot as this is not usually required. The gates open back up at 6:30. The first band will take the field at 7:30. Anticipate returning in time for the first performance because it can take awhile before we are informed of Jenison's time slot.

BAG POLICY
For MCBA finals BOA Regionals & Nationals, stadiums encourage spectators to not bring bags into venues. Pending each venue's specific guidelines, small bags, clear bags and emergency medical bags may be permitted. Bag policies are effective to expedite entry into venues and provide additional safety. Spectators will be allowed to bring items such as cameras provided, they are not in cases that would violate the bag policy at that venue.

Food

Tony Packo’s Hot Dogs Will Change Your Life

According to Toledoans, there is no better hot dog, not even in Detroit. Tony Packo’s is a true Hungarian restaurant and the Hungarian Dog is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. Served with mustard, onions and hot dog sauce, it’s a must-try when visiting. We only have to explain how amazing they are to out-of-towners until they’ve tasted one, then it’s completely obvious.

Every Toledoan Gets Grumpy's Once In A While
Grumpy’s is a Toledo staple and it’s all about the garbage salad. It’s not a salad, it’s a entire dinner and lunch the next day. It’s intoxicating. It’s a carnival of flavors dancing in your mouth. Everyone gets a little Grumpy's every now and then.

MCBA/BOA
What do these initials mean?  You will see these abbreviations at competitions so I wanted to share with you what they are.

MCBA (The Michigan Competing Band Association) is the organization that puts on Michigan marching competitions.

BOA (Bands of America) hosts Regional/Super Regional events as well as the big mamma jamma that is Grand Nationals.
These 2 organizations score competitions differently so I will attempt to explain how that is done for the 2 groups.

MCBA: Bands are classified according to the total student enrollment (school wide, not just band)
2021 MCBA Flights of Competition
Flight I    More than 2026
Flight II     1155 - 2025
Flight III    890 - 1154
Flight IV    681 - 879
Flight V     Less than 680:

MCBA competitions have 7 judges.  These judges all have extensive training and are affiliated with DCI (Drum Corps International), BOA (Bands of America)  or WGI  (Winter Guard International)

Here is the breakdown on the weight of each judged area:

Music Field Judge – 10% of the total score
Music Ensemble Judge – 20% of the total score
Visual Field Judge – 10% of the total score
Visual Ensemble Judge – 20% of the total score
Music General Effect Judge – 20% of the total score
Visual General Effect Judge – 20% of the total score
Total possible score = 100

BOA: Just like MCBA, bands are categorized into divisions according to the total student enrollment.

Bands are assigned to classes based on the following enrollment levels (grades 10-12):
Class A – 600 or fewer
Class AA – 601 -1250
Class AAA – 1251 -1750
Class AAAA – 1751 and above

BOA has 7 judges like MCBA.  Here are what those judges look for.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE (INDIVIDUAL) This judge is located on the field and is free to move about the field. This judge evaluates the entire show from beginning to end and uses an audio recorder for comments. There is one judge in this caption.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE (ENSEMBLE) This judge is located in the stands or in the press box, whichever location affords the best vantage point. The location is fixed during the entire competition. This judge evaluates the entire show from beginning to end and uses an audio recorder for comments. There is one judge in this caption.

VISUAL PERFORMANCE (INDIVIDUAL) This judge is located on the field and is free to move about the field. This judge evaluates the entire show from beginning to end and uses an audio recorder for comments. There is one judge in this caption.

VISUAL PERFORMANCE (ENSEMBLE) This judge is located in the stands or in the press box, whichever location affords the best vantage point. The location is fixed during the entire competition. This judge evaluates the entire show from beginning to end and uses an audio recorder for comments. There is one judge in this caption. The two Music Performance judges have their scores averaged for a total of 20 points. The two Visual Performance judges have their scores averaged for a total of 20 points.

GENERAL EFFECT VISUAL This judge is located in the press box and uses an audio recorder for comments. There is one judge in this caption, and his score is not averaged with any other score.

GENERAL EFFECT MUSIC There are two judges in this caption, and both are located in the press box. They judge the entire show from beginning to end, using an audio recorder to record their comments; their scores are not averaged.

TIMING & PENALTIES The Field Manager is located on the field and is free to move about the field. The Field Manager assesses the entire show from beginning to end and uses a sheet for comments regarding all timing and penalty considerations of the show.

Rockford Invitational

This Saturday, September 25 is the Rockford Invitational. In our weekly band email, a detailed schedule for Jenison students was included.

25 Days & Counting

9/1/2021

We are 25 days away from the first competition.  As parents, it is such an exciting time to watch our kids performing out on the field.  I thought this would be a great time to discuss band competition etiquette.

Things you should do at a band competition.
Support all bands. Regardless of which band is on the field you should applaud or even cheer when they do a good job.  All these students work very hard and deserve our support.
Watch the whole show. Observe different sections  of the bands performance. Your interest may be percussion but, you might be surprised with the work the colorguard is doing. Often, several things are going on at once in a show. If you watch a show several times you may see something new on each time.
Show up early. This is especially true for supporters of larger class bands. Many smaller class bands have great shows. Arrive early at the next show and see what you have been missing.
When attending a performance outdoors, be prepared for inclement weather with a poncho or raincoat. Umbrellas block the view of those behind you and may even be dangerous to others in the close quarters of stadium seating.

Things that you should avoid.

Talking during performances.
It is important to realize that although it is fun to visit with family and friends during a contest, it is unfair to distract other spectators from enjoying the show.  Save conversations for the times between performances. Others want to hear the music.

 Walking Around During
A performance. The performance  time for each band is fifteen minutes. Each show lasts around 7 to 9 minutes so that gives you plenty of time between bands to leave the seating area for concessions or to enter the stadium.

Phone Calls
Do not talk on your cell phone. Turn off your cell phone or set it to vibrate.

Allowing Children To Run Around
Do not allow children to play in the stands and distract other spectators. For their safety and as a courtesy to others they should not be allowed to run up and down steps and play in the aisles so others may enjoy the show.

Criticizing Other Bands
Be careful what you say about the performance of other bands while you are at a competition.  Being appreciative of the performance of other bands will leave a lasting positive impression of the Jenison Marching Band.

And under no circumstances, should you do the following:

Participate in the performance by bringing your own instrument

Take bets/gamble on which bands will take the caption awards (unless it is under the guise of a fundraiser)

While not expressly prohibited, avoid the use of umbrellas, wearing Ten Gallon hats and or Easter Bonnets lest they block other’s view of the competition.
