You Made it Through Mini Camp, How Did it Go?

So Mini Camp is over, we made it.  How was it?  Exhausting?  Exciting?  Confusing?Difficult?  Your child is likely feeling several different emotions regarding their introduction to the new marching band season, but I hope that overall it was a great introduction to what lies ahead.  As a second year marching band parent of two very different kids, I believe that each member enjoys (and dreads) different aspects.  Hopefully your child is pumped (is that still a cool word?) about the season after their experiences earlier this week.  If your child is feeling discouraged, encourage him/her to hang in there.  All that hard work and discipline, along with the tired sore muscles, will add up and in the end our kids will pull together another amazing show that they will be proud to perform.  Trust me.

Random Marching Band Facts...

Percussionists are either in the front ensemble (formerly referred to as 'the pit') or the battery. The front ensemble does not March but instead plays the instruments such as the marimba, vibraphone, suspended cymbals, synthesizer, and more! The battery includes the bass drums, tenors & snares.  The battery is the only section that wears a specific practice uniform (white shirt/red shorts). The shorts color changes each year.  Winds include all the instruments other than the battery & front ensemble.

Band Boosters

Am I a Band Booster?  Any parent of a child in band is a part of the Band Boosters and we want to help everyone get involved.  There are many ways to do this.  You can donate time and/or items and spend hours or minutes serving our children and the amazing people who spend countless hours with them.  Attend the meetings, drop off food, volunteer your time, sew some flags, hand out uniforms…be a part of what makes the Jenison Bands a success.

Volunteers Needed:  Feed the Band

It’s starting!  Marching band begins on Monday with Mini Camp.  We need help to Feed the Band.  Students will practice from 2pm – 9pm with a break for dinner.  Sign up online to donate food or time to make sure our teens get healthy meals both Monday and Tuesday.

Quick Tips

1.        Band practice ends at 9pm…Yes, practice ends at 9pm.  However, once practice ends everyone helps to put instruments away before they are released to leave for the night.  If you arrive at 9pm to pick up your child, be prepared to wait a bit before he/she makes it to your car…especially those in the Pit.

2.       Don’t forget lots of water and sunscreen for Mini Camp.

3.       Be sure to check out SCRIP!  Every Monday outside the band room from 6-8pm…even during the summer!
