There is a group meeting this Thursday, 8/17 to work on fences. Meet at 6:15 at the football garage if you are available to help. They will be there for about 2 hours if you can drop in at any time that evening.

We had our August Booster meeting last night and tons of great information was shared! If you are a new parent, it is really a great use of time for you to attend the meetings (especially during marching season). I'll highlight some items that were discussed last night.
Feed the Band Food donations have been great for the Feed the Band events that have taken place so far! Thank you! One note: It is helpful if you label your donations and drop them off within the designated time frame. If that time frame doesn't work for you, please contact the Feed the Band chair listed on the sign up. They are happy to pick up donations or allow you to drop them off at an alternate time. Any donations not received have to be purchased so it's helpful to have donations delivered in a timely manner. If you brought your own dish they are ready for pick up after clean up. Anything not picked up the same day is moved into the locked band storage room. Spartan-Nash Receipts If you shop at Spartan Nash stores (Family Fare or D&W) you can turn in your receipts to the band office. For every $150,000 in receipts turned in Spartan Nash will donate $$$ to the band. Sewing The band is ordering screen printed flags this year so there is NO SEWING to be done! Invitational The Invitational is a huge money maker for the Jenison Bands. Without this fundraiser our band fees would be significantly higher. We need your help! Families are required to sign up for a minimum of two shifts at the Invitational. There are still several slots available, especially evening concessions. This is a very busy shift and we need lots of help. If you are choosing not to pick this shift because you want to see Jenison perform at the end of the night, Ed has promised that he will release anyone who wants to go out and watch the band. Please check out this link and see what spots are still available to do your part! www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0c49aeaa23a02-jenison3 Volunteer Credits Remember when volunteering to bring along your credit form so your time can be credited to you. Join us for the September meeting on Tuesday, Sept 19 @7pm. Hopefully you've found the link to the band camp info on the Jenison Bands website under the "News" link (or you actually received the one your student was given). It has lots of valuable information about what to pack, what not to pack, as well as a general schedule for the week. Here are a few last minute notes...
When asked, my experienced son says the best advice for Freshmen is, "STAY HYDRATED!" It is so important for students to drink lots of water throughout the week. Also, stay away from excessive amounts of junk food. This isn't to eliminate caloric intake (for surely they will burn LOTS of calories) but rather it contributes significantly to how they will feel throughout the week. Newbies love to bring lots of junk food, experienced ones bring healthier options...or eat the junk more selectively at least. Another bit of advice. WEAR SUNSCREEN. I know, your student wants a tan. I get it, but trust me, a bad sunburn on day 1 will make you miserable the rest of the week. You will get some sun even while wearing sunscreen. You are welcome to go out to Hope College and visit during the week if you are curious about what they are up to. Several families will stop by rehearsals at the stadium to see the progress being made. Your visit isn't about seeing your student and visiting with him or her, but rather just watching from the stands. While certainly not a requirement, it is an option that I like to throw out for new band parents. The community performance on Friday is truly that...a community performance. Invite grandma & grandpa, aunts & uncles, or anyone else who might be interested in coming. You'll be amazed at how many alumni and "non-band" people show up. Though the performance itself is brief, it is amazing to see how much progress they can make in a couple weeks. Your student will be exhausted. Don't have high expectations for big accomplishments Friday night or Saturday morning. Sleep will definitely be in order. |
